Should You Put Your GPA on Your Resume?

When to include your GPA, when to leave it off, how to format it and what to do when an application requires it.

TL;DR: Include it if it helps you and the employer or field expects it, commonly a 3.5 or above for competitive early-career roles. Leave it off if it is low and you have stronger material, unless the application requires it. Never round up or inflate it. If a form asks for GPA, answer accurately.

The general guidance

  • Strong GPA (roughly 3.5 or higher): include it, especially for finance, consulting, research and large-company programs that ask.
  • Middle GPA: include it if you have little other evidence, or if the employer asks.
  • Low GPA: consider omitting it from the resume and letting projects, work and skills carry the page. Be ready for the application form to ask.

These are norms, not rules. Fields differ.

Other ways to show strength

  • Major GPA, if it is higher: "Major GPA: 3.7".
  • Dean's list or honors.
  • Relevant coursework with outputs.
  • Strong project results.

Formatting

  • Put it on the Education line: "GPA: 3.62/4.00".
  • Include the scale if it is not 4.0.
  • Do not round up. A 3.46 is not a 3.5.
  • Use cumulative unless you label major GPA clearly.

When a form asks

Many applications require it. Answer truthfully. If you do not have one, as with some programs or countries, say "N/A" if the field allows. If the field requires a number, explain in a note if available.

Employers may verify GPA, and a mismatch can lose you an offer.

Consistency

Make sure your resume, application forms and LinkedIn match. A good answer bank records exactly how you report GPA. See How to Answer Common Job Application Questions.

Tools and GPA

Applications that ask for GPA should use your number exactly as stored. Applyinator reuses the details you gave at setup and does not invent figures; if a form asks something it has no answer for, it waits for you.

One page, in the right order

Where GPA sits in your layout depends on how strong the rest is. See How Long Should a Student or New Grad Resume Be?.

Key takeaway: show GPA if it helps, leave it off if stronger evidence exists, and never inflate it.

FAQ

### Should I list GPA if I am a graduate student? Often only if it is strong or requested. Many professional roles care more about experience.
